Burberry’s history truly begins in 1856, when Thomas Burberry of Hampshire England designed his first trench coat. The British army had used waterproof trench coats regularly during WW1 and the garment gradually made its way into the city of London, becoming everyday attire. When Roberto Menichetti began designing for the brand in the late 90’s, he innovated this utilitarian garment into one of chicness, unique in pattern and details. In 2001 Christopher Bailey took over as Creative Director, working on Burberry’s Prorsum (or “forward” in Latin), extending the brand’s sophistication and iconic pieces beyond the Trench. Fine leather bags, accessories, scarves, evening dresses, blanket wraps, and more, Burberry continues to be a staple English label with great fans such as Alexa Chung, Emma Watson, and Agnes Deyn.
