In 1907 Henri Bendel built the foundations for his New York business, with his infamous brown and white stripes marking the face of the brand. Bendel was a pioneer in America's luxury retail industry; the first to find success as a designer as well as retailer, the first to open up shop on Manhattan’s high-end Fifth Avenue, the first to stage a fashion show and introduce Coco Chanel to America (along with other Parisian couture)… and additionally, he is known to have discovered Andy Warhol in the ’60s (who began working as an in-house illustrator for Bendel). Bendel’s reputable, refreshing sensibility and aptitude for curating that which is of top class, brought his brand to the forefront of New York’s utmost elite audience.
